How To Recognize Tax Preparer Fraud

You may not know it but your tax service provider may be incompetent or a crook.  Many tax returns are prepared by fraudulent preparers, so you should be careful.  You must choose someone that is capable of helping you prepare an accurate return and not because they are charming and promises big refunds.

So if you want to have a paid tax preparer file your taxes, choose that someone sensibly.  Even if you let someone file taxes for you, you are still legally responsible and you are the one that will be audited.

Most tax preparers are qualified and honest. So how can you recognize a crook when you see one?

First, find out the person’s credentials and do a background check.  Know if he or she is affiliated with any company or a professional organization.   It is also helpful to ask references from previous clients.    Avoid those who claim to give you a larger refund than others.  Think of it, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.   Avoid preparers who base their fee on a percentage of the amount of the refund.  Your tax preparer must sign your tax return and provides you with a copy for your records.  Always review the forms before you sign it and ask questions if you don’t understand.  Your tax service provider must be always present to answer your queries.   Check also the IRS website regarding tax schemes and swindles.

If you suspect tax fraud or have an abusive tax service provider, you should report him to the nearest IRS office.

The fact is, you are liable for your tax return as it states your name in the form. So, when you let a tax professional do your tax returns, not all the time the work will be perfect. Making sure its all correct and theft free will always be a wise choice.
